In the last issue of the Salemite, the article "International Students Feel Mistreated" made a few waves among students and faculty.
The article addressed issues within the community of international students at Salem. The topics addressed were many, but the most prominent were in regard to advising for international students, housing during breaks, storage, transportation, and the relationship between the administration and the international students. Speaking with the administration on these issues has shed a different light on the situation, and given answers to the questions posed in the article.
Dean Robin Smith addressed the topic of an advisor to specifically work with international students: "the faculty is committed to supporting all our students, and they play a vital role in this as academic advisors to every student on campus, both domestic and international," she said.
She did not deny that such an advisor was a possibility in the future. For the time being, however, there are three representatives of Salem faculty and administration trained to handle any issue students may have with paperwork, legal requirements, or their status in the United States.
Dean Smith explained, "Dean Evans, Dean Barr, and Ms. Shirley have all attended professional training opportunities so that they are better prepared to deal with the challenges that international students face." Dean Dana Evans in the admissions office is responsible for helping students with the visa and admission processes. The Dean of Students office, with Dean Krispin Barr and Cindy Shirley, helps students once they are a part of the student body; this includes processing work permit applications and other types of employment authorization documents.
Dean Smith informed me that Dean Evans, Dean Barr, and Cindy Shirley also monitor and comply with Homeland Security and immigration rules and regulations. Dean Smith made it clear that these three faculty members are here to deal with the problems the international students face.
